One of the most exciting elements of the HELiOS Project is our Community Climate FundTM. Based on the Community Chest movement of the early 20th century where businesses and working people contributed funds to support local projects, our Community Climate Fund (CCF) will help to build renewable energy systems on local public schools.
The CCF looks a lot like traditional “offset” programs that offer to build renewable energy projects in another state or plant trees that are intended to mitigate your personal or business greenhouse gas emissions. It isn't always easy to know how much of an impact your offset purchase provides. The CCF is very different. Every tax deductible dollar you contribute will go to installing solar panels on a local school. And although you will not receive an acknowledgement that you have purchased a “certified” offset, you will have the satisfaction of being able to see the solar panels go up on a local school right before your very eyes.
If you and your community are interested in establishing your own CCF, we will provide you with everything you need to know to get started. We are currently evaluating potential solar projects in three two East Bay school districts and will post information on them in August 2011.
You can contribute to those projects now - knowing that every dollar you donate will be applied to a local solar school project.
You can make a tax deductible contribution through our Donate Now! portal or by sending a check payable to the Sequoia Foundation/HELiOS at 800 Hearst Avenue, Berkeley, CA 94710. All contributions are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
